Trauma… is the proc better than stats?
Oh Trauma…. when I first saw this weapon come out I cringed, I hate fluky proc weapons… but here I am about to tell you it’s probably our best in slot.
Let me start off by saying the stats on Trauma suck. No, they do, you can’t argue that. No spirit, not even the less desirable m/5… same spell power as on any other main hand or staff from ICC, nothing great… so what makes it desirable?
This proc is what makes this weapon so interesting for druid healers. Each time your spell heals a target… not each time you cast a spell… each time the spell heals. So every click of rejuvenation, ever click of wild growth, ever click of any of our HoTs has a chance to proc this weapon. And boy does it… 1% chance per HoT tick, no internal cool down.
On a fight like Blood Queen, the proc (Fountain of Light) heals for 5-6% of my healing in a 25 man regular setting. On Sindragosa, where I have long periods with limited casting and more wild growth… it makes up more like 8-10% of my healing.
Now I’m not saying it’s the best for every circumstance. For example, on Deathbringer Saurfang, the proc probably won’t do you much good. And you also need gear good enough to “soak up” the stat loss you take by using it… but for a lot of fights, as a raid healer, I’m sad (as a staff & stats lover) to say this really is our BIS.
I’ll still keep a staff around for some fights, and I’ll pick up Sundial of Eternal Dusk as my offhand. Looks like (unless they nerf it) this is the bad boy I’ll be ending WotLK with!
On a side note… sorry for the lack of updates recently. As you all know I recently started my own guild, Sated. Boy does that take a lot of time to get up and going! Then, once that started to settle down, the stomach flu made it’s rounds at my house
But now we’re all healthy, the guild is up and running, and it’s back to regular posting! I hope to have a new video up by the end of the week!

I agree I love Trauma however I was under the impression that it does have an internal cool down. not a huge one cause the weapon is still amazing but idk I read somewhere that it does. Gonna have to do some more research on it now that your saying it doesn’t.
I also use it for most fights. However I’ve been trying to get the staff to use on specific fights however for the life of me it wont drop. literally every time we’ve killed BQ since she’s been out she’s dropped her damn neck piece.
P.S. Glad to see your back as well as your guild is up and running good job
Yeah, I like Trauma, but mainly for 25-mans. I guess that’s mostly the target of this blog so would go without saying, but I’d definitely go for stats in 5-man, and usually 10-man as well. I feel iffy about it in 10-mans, though. Do you use Trauma in 10-mans?
On constant dmg fights like Sin and Fester, the druid in our guild was having it do as much as 10% of this effective healing. The proc is seriously insane. Im using the legendary and we went from being roughly in the same ballpark on those fights to him just blowing away all the other healers and its due primarily to the crazy amount this thing goes off.
Been flipping on an off in 10s. Defiantly better in 25s but I still used it for like, heroic BQL in 10s and some other fights. On LK I noticed my mana not being… well normal… so I popped on the staff and problem solved!
This (and the heroic version) are definitely best in slot for any fight with raid damage, ever since they fixed the proc to be raid-wide instead of limited to the party of the healed person.
I also carry a spi/haste staff for the odd fight where Trauma’s proc isn’t useful (read: Saurfang, and perhaps dragon-healing-only V), but the gain isn’t that much since I’m already haste capped.
Also, for LK, being very aggressive with innervate (you can innervate 4+ times during the fight!) will solve most mana problems.
Interesting article. I have really thinking about picking it up since it happens to drop almost every week. Once I can pick up an off hand of the same caliber I may give it a try due to being haste capped etc without a haste stacked weapon like most the staffs in ICC.
I picked up Trauma last night, other healers kindly passed to me the new druid. Very next fight, which was professor, I went from being 5th healer to 2nd healer; some of that I attribute to skill, a lot I attribute to Fountain of Light. My druid mentor from the guild Sonya already had Trauma, and is better geared – she dominates healing at the moment!
Get this if you can.
I have not yet caught the trauma, I have some doubts about the haste rating. I’m currently with 800 haste rating, if I equip the trauma, my rod will drop to 640. Is that even with the low haste rating to heal my injury will be good?
Hugs.
