ICC Trash Farming: Insane or Necessary?

As we all know, the rep in ICC works similar to Karazhan, in that you get a ring that keeps upgrading with each level of reputation earned.  We start with this ring at friendly and end with this ring at exalted (if you are reading this on facebook or an RSS reader, those mouse-overs won’t work, try looking on restorationdruid.com :) )  I know some people are totally jazzed about that ring.  Many of my own guildies have taken to farming the trash before we clear the raid to rep up faster.

Upgrading for progression!  See, I get that.  I do… honestly… but… the thing is… ICC isn’t hard, and we are at least a couple months off hard modes.  Being that, as a non-human, I’m already honored…. I’m not to worried about be exalted before the hard stuff hits anyway.

How about you?  Do you think its a good idea to farm trash for rep to get that last ring faster?  Or are you like me and you think they’re nuts?  Please do comment!

In other news, i’ve been PUGging… on my lowbies.  It seems characters in the pre-BC range get a random blue for doing the daily random, BC randoms give you the old 70 badges, and any WotLK random gives you Triumph badges.  I liked the idea of leveling my 71 cow up by doing the daily random, getting some XP and already saving badges for her 80 gear… but… I’ve had a painful experience.

Today for example, I got Utgarde Keep as my random.  48 mins later… we still hadn’t killed the second boss and I dropped the group.  Not only was it painfully slow (and too slow for me to make my raid time) they were idiots.  Here is some sample conversation:

Pug Jenkins: Oh thats so gay

Tard Pug: Yeah super gay

Pug Idiot: Definatly homo!

I felt my IQ dropping just being in the group.  Please… if you ever PUG with a druid named Angela, just don’t talk… please… because when people say things like that, I just sorta hate everyone.  I don’t like believing the whole world is full of ignorant and stupid people.  Please… prove me wrong!  Oh… and I also got to listen to these PUGs congratulate themselves on being awesome, which clearly they were not or we’d have been moving faster.

I did have a successful pug on my 32 holy paladin, so I guess not all groups are idiots.  I just wish it would stop giving me items that add to strength, intellect please!

  1. I’ve left guilds over idiots who think “gay” equates to “stupid.” I take personal offense to it and it’s annoying as hell. Since I have three sets of T9 to build (8 of 12 pieces down, praise Elune) I’ve been going through heroic after heroic after heroic, both as a healer and tank. People are either awesome or really…dense. Seriously a hunter who thinks he can chain pull and try to wipe the group (we just stood there, watched him die, then picked up adds easily) rains on my parade of the pre-made guild group who finished CoS with 10 minutes to spare.

Four more pieces. Two hundred more emblems. At an average of 4 emblems per heroic, that’s 25 heroics, or 100 more random people I will run with. Assume that one out of every five is an idiot, and that’s 20 dumbasses I have to put up with to get my set bonuses.

Haven’t PUG’d on my alts for a reason. Once I’m done with this, I’m finished with ‘em for a loooooooong time to come :)

“Assume that one out of every five is an idiot, and that’s 20 dumbasses I have to put up with to get my set bonuses.”

I think that is a generous assumption.

  3. Wow! those people sound pretty ignorant. I hate it when people talk like that, its annoying, offensive, and just puts a bad vibe out. I would have dropped group too if I were in that situation.

I’ve been doing lots of daily random’s on my shaman who is currently in the BC area, and for some reason people seem to be a lot friendlier and more intelligent at that level. Sure there is the occasional DK who thinks he knows how to tank after 2 days of playing his toon, but other then that, things usually go pretty smoothly. Then I go and try to do my daily random on either my 80 Druid or my 80 Palidan, and I get the stupid people who don’t know how to play their toons? Seems kind of backward to me but that’s what I’ve found.

As for farming rep, I too am at honored already and don’t see the point in farming. I find it kind of boring and repetitive. Like you said, we probably wouldn’t even need it until we start doing heroic, and I’m sure I’ll have it long before then.

One more thing about the ring, I heard they were working on some stats with the rings? because a lot of classes weren’t happy, I for one am not totally satisfied with our ring, I would much rather Spirit then MP5, and a red socket instead of a yellow. But guess it can’t be perfect right? I doubt they will come out with a more ‘Druid friendly’ ring, but its just something I heard around and thought I’d mention.

“I heard they were working on some stats with the rings?”

I hope you’re right, but I won’t hold my breath!

  5. I’m against “rep farming”. We’ve gone in there as a group & have been in there long enough for mobs to respawn. (yay! rep!) But, I couldn’t bring myself to go, with full intentions of having no intentions at all. The trash in there isn’t like Karazhan, the ballroom alone could get you honored & the stables on a 20 some minute timer.

ICC is pull a dozen or some mobs, wait 2 hours. (rinse, repeat)

  6. Meh, I don’t mind the rep farming. Once or twice prior to raid time is fine. guild is 10 mans only so the rep farming makes it nice for the extra rep and better ring. If you have the time you might as well farm it.

  7. I haven’t had a chance to join the guild for rep grinding yet, but we’re having a “taking out the trash” new year’s eve party, and since I have nothing better to do, I’m going to give it a try. For me it’s more a cool experience since I haven’t raided before, so it’s like getting the huge group experience without the stressful bosses xD

  8. I rep farmed a bit on my alts as they are not getting into ICC 25, 10 only and I want the shiny rings :) on my main I’ll get it fast enough with 10 and 25 clears each week.

  9. I have been grinding rep for the chance to meet new players and try new things. The runs are casual, and between clears there is plenty of time to inspect and add good players to my list of “maybe sometime we could…” raid friends. Also, good for technique: as a healer I hesitate to move buttons around, try new macros, or mess with my UI on raid nights; here, on trash, we are usually overpowered enough to allow me the chance. The Rep? Yeah it’s nice, but there’s really only the ring to gain from that.

  10. what are you guys talking about having to wait between runs… you simplily clear all the trash up to 1st boss run out click reset all instances and run back in… it acts like a normal 5man with no bosses read you will just enter a new raid ID

  11. the best way to do the lowbie random LFG is to bring a friend! i’m mucking through the 50s bracket right now as a disc priest with an enhance shaman levelling buddy who can plow through the mobs and is often a better tank than the assigned one.

also, my boyfriend and i find that queues are INSTANT if you queue as tank/healer. so, we have various tank/healer pairs now that do instances on. our 80s: his feral druid/my resto shaman. my dk/his priest. our mid 70s: his prot pally/my resto druid. our pally/druid pair have been grouping with guildies as well that we know are solid players. we can clear our regular instances before the LFG debuff is gone, queues are instant and we went from 72-75 in 3 hours. this is fantastic.

  12. oh, and if we are not doing the random instances with other levelling guildies and we come across a strong DPS or two or three, we’ll ask them if they’d like to queue with us. no one trying to solo-queue as a DPS especially in a non-80 bracket is going to turn down instant queues with a speed-pulling tank and capable healer. win/win situation!

  13. oh man. WTB ability to modify comments!

i forgot to comment on the rep grinding. if i felt that grinding this rep was an exploit, i would be against it. but i’m in favor of maximizing my character. the revered ring has a REALLY nice on-equip proc (although it still has the placeholder name of something along the lines of Item – Icecrown Reputation Ring Healer Effect) that has a huge uptime. the exalted ring has a gem socket, the importance to me i will get to in a moment.

the first week ICC was out, we cleared 10man on the first day. by thursday of the following week i had my exalted ring, with gem socket. the reason i put so much priority into this ring was because i was looking ahead to not only the changes in resto-shaman tier itemization but also towards my guild’s intentions to clear as many of the meta-requirement achievements towards getting our 25man drakes as soon as they were available. putting in the 9 or so hours of reputation grinding was not a big deal to me, as i’m a little bit obsessive compulsive and completely fine with repetitive routine, and i had the time to spare.

unlike other classes i cannot just focus on spellpower received from raiding professions/base stats. i have to shoot for the haste-moon and that is why i chose my professions (JC/BS) as they provide more flexibility in the raid-benefits available and why i aimed for the socketed ring and not just the SP-proc bonus from the revered ring. in fact, because haste>spellpower for me, before revered i was using the caster DPS ring because haste was a base stat on it. i paid the gold to switch paths once i’d be able to get the healer proc.

another really attractive quality to this ring is the ease in which it is received. this is great for people who have many alts they can’t focus on 100% and who don’t want to fall behind on gear too much, as well as people who simply don’t have the opportunity or ability to regularly raid 10 and/or 25 ICC. while i think gear comes far too easily now and that one thing many new-players are lacking is the experience of REALLY working hard to climb the very long gear-ladder. having nice gear was something to actually be proud of because of the dedication and skill and patience it took to acquire it.. where as now you can be fully epic within minutes of hitting 80, with many end-game content level gear. my level 77 druid is the epitome of this! she currently has Lunar Eclipse Robes, Moonshadow Bracers, Tears of the Vanquished and some epic helm or another in her bags as well as enough triumph badges to get at least 2 or 3 pieces of t9 the moment i ding 80… and i plan on grinding with guildies who are still working on rep with this druid to help out but also to get a really nice ring at friendly or honored.

the way i see it there are only positives to this. people have to work for this reputation, even if it is incredibly easy (too easy, imo) to grind, instead of it being handed to them in a 5man heroic. they will get very accustomed to many of the fight mechanics found throughout the raid instance, beyond the trash. this will increase their raid awareness and the stats from the ring will help them maximize their raid contribution.

i’m all for it. and now i will shaddup since i’ve babbld and taken over your blog, it seems :X

  14. I started my resto druid a little while ago (less than a year into WOW, my main is a 70+ tankadin) and this this char is not so slowly becoming my main. I absolutely love the play of my (yet to be) tree!! Ive been doing the randoms to level, and must say it is a godsend for lvling as resto!!! But im having so much fun doing it… im leveling this char with my gf’s rogue and we are having a blast instancing together… I just cant wait to get to endgame with my tree!
Keep a lookout for Treehuggah, Jaedenar….

    Just a little update…

With no trash farming at all, just 10 and 25 man runs, I got exalted on Tuesday, well before all of ICC was even open.
